If you are still looking for a holiday spot in Turkey, have you considered Istanbul? Istanbul is the largest city of Turkey and used to be known as Constantinople. This huge city is the economic, historic and cultural center of the entire country. It’s even the most populous city in all of Europe, it has more than 15 million inhabitants, which is about 19% of the population of Turkey. When you compare Istanbul to other cities in the world, it ranks number 15 of the largest cities in the world.
Constantinople used to be the Roman capital of New Rome in 330 CE. The city kept growing in both size and influence and eventually became one of the most important cities ever. For 16 centuries, it was an imperial capital for multiple different empires. It was also a key city in the advancement of Christianity in Roman and Byzantine times. Istanbul can be found in the north-western part of Turkey on the strait Bosporus. This is the only passage between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. Because of its location, the city was perfect for both trade and defense against enemies. The weather in Istanbul can vary with its cool winters, where it may rain a lot, and warm to hot summers, during which there is little precipitation.
When you’re in Istanbul, there are plenty of things you can do. The city is full of ancient monuments you can go visit. During your visits to these monuments, you will notice that many of the buildings in Istanbul feature Byzantine and Ottoman architecture. In Istanbul you can find many religions in the monuments as well. Given the fact that aside from Roman and Byzantine monuments you can find Christian, Muslim and Jewish monuments as well.
In Istanbul, there are shopping districts as well. These can be found primarily on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. The city also features The Grand Bazaar, which is one of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets. It has been there and in use since 1461! Another fun activity in Istanbul is to go to Akmerkez, which has been called ‘Europe’s best’ and even ‘World’s best’ of the shopping malls in the world by the International Council of Shopping Centers. Istanbul offers plenty of options for dinner as well. Although it has many different restaurants of course, it’s also known for its historic restaurants serving seafood. The most popular ones can be found along the shores of the Bosphorus.
